well, I have a 1-3 month window on finishing it. Then the guy asked when I expected to finish. They had not researched me at all, or they would have known I had already 4 published books (2 from Create Space and 2 from my current publisher). They did not know I was an attorney and I could tell salesman was getting peeved at the questions I was asking. I said I was looking for a bigger publisher who could perhaps help me with some publicity. That brought crickets. Then I said, are you a traditional publisher or a vanity (for my non-author friends a vanity is one you pay the price of publication.) He said they were a hybrid. I said that means you need money up front, right? There was a pause and a yes. He said is that prohibitive. I said better than that, it's a deal breaker. Then I hung up. No legit publishing house makes the author cough up money up front. I mean if you are struggling for a publisher, just run it through create space. It is impossible to return a self-published or vanity published book as they are all print on demand. This means your brick and mortar stores won't buy them as they cannot return them. I got very lucky when the local Barnes&Noble bought my two self published books. So if you are going to be in that situation, use a publication service that does not ask for money up front, like Create Space. Beware: There are lots of scam artists and people who just want your money and could care less what you sell.
